KUCHING, 12 January 2009 - Sime Darby Berhad today presented RM500,000 to five rural schools in Sarawak to improve their existing infrastructure and build new facilities. The schools -- SK Nanga Mujong, SK Lubok Mawang, SK Nanga Meluan, SK Nanga Entuloh and SK Nanga Tiau – will each receive financial assistance of RM100,000 to repair and build classrooms, hostels and other facilities for students and teachers.

The contribution was presented to the Sarawak Minister of Land Development Dato’ Sri Dr James Masing by Sime Darby Executive Vice President, Group Human Resources Haji Mohamed Ishak Abdul Hamid.

The financial assistance is part of Sime Darby’s education corporate social responsibility and is an extension of its PINTAR School Adoption programme. Under the PINTAR programme, Sime Darby not only supports 22 schools in the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) and Eastern Corridor Economic Region (ECER) in West Malaysia but also provides assistance to numerous other schools in the country.

Sime Darby President & Group Chief Executive Dato’ Seri Ahmad Zubir Murshid said that the Group was working towards uplifting the standards of rural schools and as such would contribute more towards improving schools both in Sarawak and Sabah.

“At Sime Darby, we believe that to be a sustainable organization we need to have a talented pool of people and we are developing the next generation of leaders. Education is key to the development of human capital. Thus it is imperative that our children not only have the opportunity to get educated but also have the proper facilities for a good education” he said. He added that education is an essential tool in enabling and enhancing sustainable development. “Education can help shape the world of tomorrow, equip individuals and societies with skills, knowledge and values to work and live in a sustainable manner. Sime Darby believes that education will help empower the young generation to improve their lives and embrace the challenges ahead.”
