KUALA LUMPUR, 8 September 2009 - School children from 63 schools across Malaysia displayed their creativity during the 52nd National Day celebrations when they took part in Sime Darby’s 3D 2009 art designing competition.
Incorporating 1Malaysia as the theme, the students presented creative and insightful 3D artworks using various recycled materials, such as egg shells, old newspapers, wooden sticks, beads, straws and milk cartons.
All entries were digitally captured and displayed at Wisma Sime Darby from 27 August to 7 September 2009 for public viewing.
Three well-known local artists - Ahmad Fuad Osman, Chuah Chong Yong and Anurendra Jegadeva – judged the 3D artwork from SMK Teluk Bahang in Penang as the first prize winner of the competition.

The school’s winning entry, which carries a RM3,000 prize, featured the Petronas Twin Towers, the Malaysian ‘wau’, orbiting satellites and Malaysians of different races. Among recycled items used were egg shells, coconut branch, discarded plastics and newspapers.
SK Wangsa Melawati took second place, with its entry centered on Malaysia’s various ethnic groups, its economic achievements and tropical rainforests. The school, which won RM2,000 for its effort, used recycled items such as beads, cardboards, paper, wooden sticks and aluminum foils with threads.
SK SS17 in Subang Jaya grabbed the third prize which is worth RM1,000. Its entry used a mixture of recycled items, such as straws, plastic bottles, milk cartons and newspaper cutouts, and depicted Malaysia’s founding fathers, its people and flags of various states in Malaysia.
The winning schools received their prizes from Sime Darby’s Executive Vice-President of Group Corporate Services, YBhg Dato’ Sekhar Krishnan at a special ceremony held at Wisma Sime Darby in Kuala Lumpur.
The 3D art competition, initiated by the Group Corporate Social Responsibility department, is one of Sime Darby’s nation-building projects involving school children. This year’s competition saw the participation of 27 Sime Darby PINTAR schools, 31 Sime Darby Property’s adopted schools and five schools from Sarawak.
The objective of the competition is to instill national pride amongst youth as well as to reinforce the Group’s commitment and efforts in corporate social responsibility.
