A total of 52 students received scholarships worth RM7.3 million under the YSD Scholarship Programme. Of the 52 students, 20 will pursue pre-university studies, 27 undergraduate studies and 5 postgraduate studies. Forty of the students will attend local universities, while another 12 will pursue their studies in the United Kingdom and Australia.
Another 11 students received bursaries worth RM500,000 under the YSD Bursary Programme, which aims to assist students from low-income families to pursue tertiary education in any fields of study. The successful candidates are undergraduate and diploma students who possess good academic results but face financial constraints to further their education.
The deserving students received their scholarships and bursaries from YSD Council Governor, YBhg Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Wan Zahid Mohd Noordin, at a special ceremony held at the Sime Darby Convention Centre in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur today.
In his speech, Tan Sri Dato' Dr Wan Mohd Zahid said YSD has always placed emphasis on its Education pillar, which aims to promote educational achievement at various levels of education.
“We want to enable and facilitate education of the crème de la crème, which would lead to excellence and enrichment of the society,” he said, adding that YSD also promotes the well-being of the under-privileged irrespective of race, culture, religion, creed and gender as enshrined in its mission statement.
“YSD does this by way of providing education for such people to enable them to rescue themselves from the clutches of poverty and assist them in building and maintaining better lives and futures,” he noted.
In addition to the Scholarship and Bursary Programmes, YSD also provides scholarships for three other programmes, namely YSD Sponsorship for Policy Studies Programme, YSD Skilled Staffing Programme and YSD Star Programme.
The YSD Sponsorship for Policy Studies Programme, which aims to promote the development of good public policy via educational sponsorship of civil servants and armed forces at top notch overseas universities, saw four scholarships worth about RM500,000 awarded this year.
Under the YSD Skilled Staffing Programme, a total of 67 scholarships worth RM1.4 million were awarded to young individuals who are inclined towards technical skills to pursue diploma and certificate courses at the Sime Darby academies.
The YSD Star Programme, meanwhile, is a new programme involving the sponsorship of young and talented individuals who have made significant contributions to the nation in the fields of sports, arts and culture, environment and science/research. YSD plans to award its first scholarship in this category within the year.
Since its inception in 1982, YSD has awarded a total of 1,238 scholarships worth over RM69.9 million. The YSD Scholarship Programme focuses on individuals with outstanding academic achievement and strong leadership qualities. Currently, the scholarship programme has been extended to Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and soon, in China. This is in line with YSD’s efforts to identify and nurture a pool of high caliber future leaders for the Sime Darby Group globally.
