INOKOM Education Programme

UPSR tuition for employees’ children

Parents who have schoolgoing children know only too well about paying for tuition classes for their children especially those preparing for major exams.

During the annual Sime Darby Global Employee Engagement Survey in 2015, employees from INOKOM, our automotive plant in Kedah, Malaysia had shared their hopes for more community related and CSR projects to be organised by INOKOM. From their suggestion came the idea of starting tuition classes for community children. And what better way to pilot the project than to introduce it to the very people who suggested it?

Hence the birth of Inokom’s Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) tuition for employees children in 2015. What started as a pilot project with fifteen 12-year olds, has now benefited more than 50 employee children. As part of the programme, parents pay a small fee of RM15 to cover material cost, while INOKOM subsidises the teacher’s fee and provides the classroom.
The objective of the introduction of the English and Mathematics tuition programme for employee’s children who are sitting for their UPSR is two-pronged. One is to assist our employees with their children’s academic development and two, is to improve the employees’ sense of belonging and pride of being an INOKOM employee.

According to Puan Zamnah Abdul Hamid, the programme has given her children the motivation they needed to do their best for their future. Another employee whose child participated in the programme, Puan Sharifah Bt Sulaiman shared that the classes were especially helpful for parents who may not have the opportunity to send their children elsewhere for tuition classes which are expensive these days.
The three teachers involved in the programme, who are also members of the local community, shared that there has been a marked improvement in the English and Mathematics results of the participating students. Following the success of the programme which is now in its third year, INOKOM plans to expand the programme to the surrounding communities.
The INOKOM plant is located in Kulim, Kedah. The company employs a total of 2,000 employees, a majority of them residents of the state and play a key role in the development of local economy. It is hoped that CSR projects like this one continue to improve the company’s ties with the community.

Firmly believing that education is the key to creating a developed and learned society,  one of Sime Darby’s focus areas for community development is educational initiatives that would provide financial and economic opportunities for our employees, their families and communities surrounding our operations.

Across our global operations, we have introduced various education programmes like the one at INOKOM, from offering scholarships and bursaries, to helping to build schools and providing learning tools to impoverished communities.
