Sime Darby Property Mentors Contractors To QMS ISO 9001: Certification

KUALA LUMPUR, 30 April 2008 – Sime Darby Property Berhad is working towards getting all its contractors and vendors ISO 9001 certified to ensure only the highest quality and standards are applied in its development projects worldwide.
Through its Quality, Environment, Safety and Health (QESH) Mentorship Programme, Sime Darby Property aims to elevate the standards and quality of local contractors and consultants involved in the property development sector, to international levels.
The QESH Mentorship Programme was introduced to assist local companies to become more competitive in the global arena and achieve international recognition. It is open to all Sime Darby Property’s Category 1 vendors and contractors. The first batch of graduates, comprising seven contractors completed a comprehensive seven-month programme, which was conducted through a synergistic collaboration with SIRIM QAS International Sdn. Bhd, a strategic partner providing the support and upholding quality, leading companies in obtaining QMS 1SO 9001 certification.
Managing Director Dato’ Abd Wahab Maskan said that as the largest property group in the country with numerous projects and investments overseas, it was Sime Darby Property’s “responsibility to uplift the standard of the sector by sharing the knowledge and expertise gained from our operations in eight countries.”
“By transferring our knowledge and know-how to these local contractors, they are now in a position to provide total solutions to the property development sector. They will also be better prepared for legal compliance, which is a necessity if they intend to spread their wings beyond Malaysia,” he said at the awards ceremony of the inaugural QESH Mentorship Programme.
Ir. Hj. Yahaya bin Ahmad, Chairman of SIRIM QAS International in his speech congratulated Sime Darby Property for embarking on this programme and on the success that it has achieved thus far.
He added that it was indeed an honour and timely for SIRIM QAS International to be part of this programme in line with the vision of the company to be a leader in building sustainable communities and be a champion for sustainable practices.
Ir. Hj. Yahaya bin Ahmad added, “It is commendable to note that Sime Darby Property was the first developer in the country to be certified with the ISO 9001 in 1994, ISO 14001 in 2000 and OHSAS in 2003 by SIRIM QAS International.”
Sime Darby Property was the first property developer to implement the QESH Mentorship Programme, which it launched in 2006. The programme was developed in response to the Government’s call to have all contractors certified by 2009.
The seven newly ISO 9001 certified contractors will now participate in the second level of the mentorship programme which covers Environmental, Safety and Health Management System (ESH).
