In 1929, Sime Darby, through the Sarawak Trading Company, was appointed the Caterpillar dealer for Sarawak, Malaysia. At the time, the business, which was later represented by Tractors Malaysia in 1964, brought in equipment mainly to provide support and service in oil exploration activities. The growth of the logging industry then also saw Caterpillar equipment used for opening trails, log skidding, loading and stacking, and power generation in the timber camps. Today, Tractors Malaysia is the exclusive distributor of Caterpillar products and services in Malaysia and Brunei, servicing a variety of industries including forestry, construction, oil and gas and mining.
In commemorating its 90th anniversary, Tractors Malaysia held festivities with its partners, customers and employees, all whom have been instrumental in the success of the company. In recognising the roots and history of the company, the Miri branch in Sarawak hosted the two day event, which kicked-off with a friendly golf session with Caterpillar officials, customers and Sime Darby Industrial senior management.
Recognising instrumental role that the local communities play in supporting the company’s growth, Sime Darby Industrial (SDI) held several Corporate Social Responsibility activities with the local communities in Miri, including a ‘Back to School’ programme in partnership with Yayasan Sime Darby for schools in the surrounding areas. More than 779 primary school pupils received school bags, uniforms, shoes and supplies worth more than RM70,000.
SDI also donated RM50,000 to the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society, raised through the rental of a pink Caterpillar 320GC excavator to customers in Sarawak. Through a joint effort with Caterpillar, a 50KVA Caterpillar generator worth more than RM50,000 was donated to Sekolah Kebangsaan Sg. Laong in Bakong, located about three hours from Miri. The school with its 60 pupils is solely dependent on generator sets for its electricity supply.
To close off the two-day event, a gala dinner with a retro theme was held, to commemorate the anniversary with customers, current and old employees, and other stakeholders. Among those present were former Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan, Caterpillar Vice President for Asia Pacific Distribution Mr Raymond Chan, Sime Darby Berhad Group Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Jeffri Salim Davidson, and Sime Darby Industrial Sdn Bhd Managing Director Mr Teoh Cy Kuan.
During the dinner, Mr Teoh took the opportunity to thank those present, particularly customers and employees who have been loyal to the company throughout the years.
“We would never have been able to picture this successful journey without all of you. First of all, to our partner, Caterpillar, for their commitment & trust in Tractors Malaysia all these years, our loyal customers who have journeyed with us for decades, our present as well as our former employees, all of who have worked tirelessly,” he said.
Today, having survived World Wars, economic and financial downturns, Tractors Malaysia is proud and pleased to be able to continue to participate and contribute to the growth and development of Sarawak and Malaysia. In ensuring the company remains relevant well into the future, the company is committed to providing products and services that will enable all our stakeholders, especially customers, to become more productive and profitable.
