Delivering Sustainable Development

Certified Sustainable Palm Oil

Objective
To fully certify all our estates and mills under the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) and to continue increasing our fully segregated annual capacity via supply chain certification.
Progress
100% of Sime Darby Plantation's (SDP's) Malaysian Upstream units and 96% of its Indonesian Upstream units have been RSPO-certified. Additionally, all of SDP's Downstream business units in Malaysia and 77% in Indonesia have also received the RSPO Supply Chain Certification. The integration of NBPOL, a 100% RSPO certified company, with upstream operations in PNG and Solomon Islands and Downstream unit in Liverpool, United Kingdom, further strengthened SDP's position as the world’s largest producer of Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO).
Approach
As a founding member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), Sime Darby Plantation (SDP) continues to support and uphold the RSPO Principles & Criteria (P&C) as a benchmark and assurance of sustainable planting of oil palm. The RSPO badge has become a key differentiator of SDP's palm oil products and is sought after in all markets; for quality and sustainability.

The RSPO P&C provides the framework for SDP to sustainably manage its SOUs. Company policies and standard operating procedures are strictly enforced at its estates and regular internal RSPO audits are conducted to identify and rectify areas of non-compliance. SDP's SOUs are certified by independent, approved Certification Bodies. In particular, Sime Darby Plantation’s compliance with the RSPO P&Cs is supported by its:
  • Agricultural Reference Manual – A reference manual for good agricultural practices (RSPO P&C 4) and for new developments (RSPO P&C 8)
  • Sustainable Plantation Management System – A framework for key issues including new planting, biodiversity conservation and management, social engagement and management etc. (RSPO P&C 1, 5, 6 and 7)
  • Plantation Quality Management System – A framework for quality management, continuous improvement and legal compliance (RSPO P&C 2, 3 and 8)
  • Environmental Safety & Health Manual – A reference manual for specific ESH issues and management (RSPO P&C 5 and 6)
All policies and standard operating procedures are periodically reviewed to ensure they reflect advancing standards and the outcomes from research and development. Key to SDP's approach is the engagement with stakeholders such as employees, contractors, adjacent communities and smallholders and third party suppliers. SDP interacts with these groups through formal and informal processes such as employee training programmes, open dialogue and briefings.
